Hulusi Akar

Hulusi Akar (1 January 1952-) was Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Army from 18 August 2015, succeeding Necdet Ozel (Umit Dundar was acting Chief of Staff from 15 to 16 July 2016 while Akar was held hostage by mutinous soldiers).

Biography[]

Hulusi Akar was born on 1 January 1952 in Kayseri, Turkey, and he attended the Turkish Military Academy in 1972 and the Infantry School in 1973. Akar also studied international diplomacy at Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Akar was experienced as a brigade commander during the Bosnian War, Kosovo War, and the Afghanistan War, experiencing numerous NATO deployments. On 18 August 2015, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Army by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and on 15 July 2016 he was taken hostage by the military during the coup attempt against Erdogan, being held at the military headquarters in Ankara. He was rescued in the early hours of 16 July 2016, and he replaced acting Chief of Staff Umit Dundar as Chief of General Staff upon his rescue.
