Hugo Ballivian

Hugo Ballivian (7 June 1901-15 July 1993) was President of Bolivia from 16 May 1951 to 11 April 1952, succeeding Mamerto Urriolagoitia and preceding Hernan Siles.

Biography[]

Hugo Ballivian was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1901, a distant relative of Jose Ballivian, Adolfo Ballivian, Pedro Jose de Guerra, and Jose Gutierrez Guerra. He served in the Bolivian Army during the Chaco War, rising to the rank of General. In 1951, Mamerto Urriolagoitia called on him to take power to prevent the reformist Victor Paz Estenssoro from being sworn in as President, but work stoppages, demonstrations, and uprisings pressured the government to turn on Ballivian. The Bolivian National Revolution forced Ballivian to seek asylum in the Chilean embassy, ending the 1880-1952 oligarchic republic. He died in 1993.
