Hugh Williamson (5 December 1735 – 22 May 1819) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-NC 2) from 19 March 1790 to 3 March 1791 (preceding Nathaniel Macon and from NC-4 from 4 March 1791 to 3 March 1793 (succeeding John Steele and preceding Alexander Mebane.
Biography[]
Hugh Williamson was born in West Nottingham Township, Pennsylvania in 1735, and he became a professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania in 1760. He later went to school in Scotland and the Netherlands to study medicine, and, while in London, he testified about his witnessing of the Boston Tea Party while en route. Williamson served as a Continental Army physician in North Carolina during the American Revolutionary War, and he was elected to the Continental Congress in 1782. Williamson went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1790 to 1793, and he later became one of the original trustees of the University of North Carolina and died in 1819.
