Biography[]
Hugh O'Bryant was born in Franklin County, Georgia in 1813, the son of a missionary, and he was raised among the Cherokee Indians, to whom his father preached. He later moved to Arkansas and from there to Oregon in 1843, becoming a merchant in Oregon City. Two years later, he moved to Portland, and he fought in the Cayuse War of 1847. O'Bryant served as Mayor of Portland from 1851 to 1852, but he missed several important votes and instead focused his attention on construction. Afterwards, he moved to Salem and then to Roseburg, and he served as a territorial legislator. He then moved to Walla Walla, Washington in 1860 and served in the territorial legislature there as well, and he finally settled in Merced County, California, where he died in 1883.
