Hugh J. Grant

Hugh John Grant (10 September 1858-3 November 1910) was the Democratic Mayor of New York City from 1889 to 1892, succeeding Abram Hewitt and preceding Thomas Francis Gilroy.

Biography[]

Hugh John Grant was born in New York City, New York in 1858 to a family of Irish Catholic immigrants. He became involved in politics as a Tammany Hall Democrat and served on the city council from 1883 to 1884 before winning the office of sheriff in 1886 and serving as Mayor from 1889 to 1892. He reorganized the city administration and had the city's electrical system moved underground, and he later retired to Oradell, New Jersey. He died in 1910.
