
Hugh Johnston Anderson (10 May 1801-31 May 1881) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-ME 6) from 4 March 1837 to 3 March 1841 (succeeding Leonard Jarvis and preceding Alfred Marshall) and the Democratic Governor of Maine from 3 January 1844 to 12 May 1847 (succeeding David Dunn and preceding John W. Dana).
Biography[]
Hugh Johnston Anderson was born in Wiscasset, Maine in 1801, and he moved to Belfast in 1815 and worked as a mercantile clerk. He served as Waldo County clerk in 1827, in the US House of Representatives from 1837 to 1841, as Governor from 1844 to 1847, as commissioner of customs in the United States Treasury Department from 1853 to 1858, and as Auditor of the Treasury from 1866 to 1869. He died in 1881.
