Hubert Howe Bancroft (5 May 1832 – 2 March 1918) was an American historian and ethnologist of the American West.

Hubert Howe Bancroft was born in Granville, Ohio in 1832 to an abolitionist family, and, in March 1852, he moved to San Francisco to set up a West Coast office for his brother-in-law's Buffalo-based bookstore. He became a successful publisher and devoted himself to writing and publishing history, writing 39 volumes about the history of the West Coast. He died in Walnut Creek, California in 1918.
