Huang Wenlu

Huang Wenlu (1804-) was a Qing Chinese general who commanded an expedition to Dai Nam in 1859 during the Cochinchina Campaign. Huang was entrusted with the establishment of a rudimentary fortress of Tan An, located 29 miles southwest of Saigon, to protect Chinese commercial interests in Cochinchina from the invading French and Spanish. Huang succeeded in defending Tan An against several attacks by both the French and Spanish, and he also defeated the French Army at the Battle of Ben Luc before being wounded at the Battle of Binh Chanh, where he failed in his attempt to destroy a French military base. Huang later convalesced and was returned to the fortress, and he was forced to withdraw from Cochinchina after the French established a trade route monopoly and defended it from a spirited Chinese counterattack.
