Howard Sutherland

Howard Sutherland (8 September 1865 – 12 March 1950) was a member of the US House of Representatives from West Virginia's at-large district (R) from 4 March 1913 to 3 March 1917 and a US Senator from 4 March 1917 to 3 March 1923, succeeding William E. Chilton and preceding Matthew M. Neely.

Biography[]

Howard Sutherland was born in Kirkwood, Missouri in 1865, and he moved to Elkins, West Virginia in 1893 to work in the mining, railroad, and timber businesses. In 1908, he was elected to the State Senate as a Republican Party member, and he went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1913 to 1917 and in the US Senate from 1917 to 1923. His son Richard K. Sutherland became a prominent general during World War II, and the elder Sutherland died five years after the war's end, in 1950.
