Valois

The House of Valois was a cadet branch of the House of Capet, and it ruled France from 1328 to 1589. The family was descended from Count Charles of Valois (1269-1325), the third son of Philip III of France, and the House of Valois came to power when Charles IV of France died without issue in 1328 and Philip of Valois was made the new king as the only possible male heir to the throne. The family ruled over France until 1589, when Henry III of France was murdered without an heir. The House of Bourbon came to power after the fall of the Valois family.
