The House of Plantagenet was a royal house originating in Anjou, France which ruled over England from 1154 to 1485. Henry II of England was the first Plantagenet monarch, and he united his holdings in France with the Kingdom of England to form the "Angevin Empire"; the Plantagenets controlled England, a claim on France, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Aquitaine, Normandy, Brittany, Anjou, the County of Maine, County of Nantes, County of Poitou, and Cyprus at varying times. The house's end came when the House of York was defeated at the Battle of Bosworth Field, leading to the rise of the House of Tudor and the end of the Plantagenet line.
