Hohenzollern

The House of Hohenzollern was a dynasty that once ruled over Prussia, the German Empire, and Romania. The family was first mentioned in medieval records in 1061, and the family split into a Catholic Swabian branch (which would rule over Romania in the 19th-20th centuries) and a Protestant Prussian branch (which would rule over Prussia and Germany). In 1415, the family became the rulers of Brandenburg, followed by Prussia in 1525; the family would proceed to become the kings of Prussia in 1701 and the emperors of Germany after 1871. In 1918, the Hohenzollerns were overthrown after the November Revolution, and the Romanian monarchy was overthrown in 1947 after World War II
