The House of Condé was a French princely house and a cadet branch of the House of Bourbon. The first Prince of Condé was Louis I de Bourbon, Prince de Conde, who assumed the title in 1557. During the French Wars of Religion, the Princes of Condé became known as staunch defenders of Protestantism, and Louis was killed at the Battle of Jarnac in 1569. The title "Prince of Condé" would be borne by Louis' male descendants, and the line went extinct in 1830 when Louis Henri, Prince of Conde died without issue.
