Horsa

Horsa (426-500) was King of Kent from 460 to 500, succeeding Hengest and preceding Oisc of Kent.

Biography[]

Horsa was born in 426, the son of Wihtgils and the brother of Hengest. Hengest and Horsa came to England as mercenaries in the service of King Vortigern of the Britons, who gave them lands in Kent in exchange for their help against the Picts and Irish. In 455, Hengest established the Jutish kingdom of Kent, and the brothers went on to conquer Sussex and Essex from the Britons and kill Vortigern's son in the process. Horsa himself was killed in battle with the Britons at the Battle of Aylesford in 500, being killed by Catigern, who himself died of wounds inflicted upon him by Horsa.
