Horatio Seymour VT

Horatio Seymour (31 May 1778 – 21 November 1857) was a US Senator from Vermont (DR) from 4 March 1821 to 3 March 1833, succeeding Isaac Tichenor and preceding Benjamin Swift.

Biography[]

Horatio Seymour was born in Litchfield, Connecticut in 1778, and he became a lawyer in 1800. From 1800 to 1809, he served as Middlebury's postmaster, and he served on the executive council from 1809 to 1814 and as the state's attorney for Addison County from 1810 to 1813 and from 1815 to 1819. In 1821, he was elected to the US Senate, and he served until 1833. During the 1830s, he ran for governor several times in an attempt to have his new party, the American Whig Party, surpass the Anti-Masonic Party as the second-largest party in the state. He died in 1857.
