Hopkins Holsey

Hopkins Holsey (25 August 1779-31 March 1859) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-GA AL) from 5 October 1835 to 3 March 1839, succeeding James C. Terrell and preceding Richard W. Habersham.

Biography[]

Hopkins Holsey was born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1779, and he was raised in Hancock County, Georgia. He became a lawyer in Harris County in 1826 and served in the State House from 1825 to 1826 and in the US House of Representatives from 1835 to 1839, after which he became a farmer and journalist in Athens. He strongly supported the Missouri Compromise, the annexation of Texas, and states' rights while opposing secessionism. He died at his estate in Butler in 1859.
