The Hop Wei Tong was a Chinese-American tong society that was active in Chinatown, San Francisco during the late 19th century. Founded by Father Jun, Hop Wei became one of the most powerful tongs in the city, rivaling the Long Zii Tong and its Fung Hai Tong allies. In 1878, the two tongs clashed over the opium trade, sparking the "Tong Wars" and drawing the attention of the San Francisco Police Department and the nativist Workingmen. That same year, Father Jun was deposed by his son Young Jun after attempting to expel him and his associate Ah Sahm from the tong for dealing behind his back, and the two youths led their tong in an all-out war against Mai Ling's Long Zii gang.
