Honduras is a republic in Central America, with its capital at Tegucigalpa. Honduras was conquered from the Native Americans by Spain from March 1524 until the 1540s, with Gil Gonzalez Davila being the first conquistador in the region. The Spanish named the country "Honduras", meaning "depths", referring to the bay of Trujillo's status as an anchorage. On 15 September 1821, Honduras joined the Federal Republic of Central America in rebelling against Spain, and the republic broke away from the republic on 5 November 1838 to become a fully independent nation. Honduras endured social strife and political instability, and it came to have the world's highest murder rate in 2016 as a result of the abject poverty of many of its citizens and gang violence. In 2010, Honduras had a population of 8,249,574 people, and Honduras' major exports are coffee, minerals, tropical fruit, and sugarcane.
