Holiest of Holies

The Holy of Holies was the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle tent, where God's presence appeared. In 1045 BC, four pillars were erected on Temple Mount to hold up a veil covering the Ark of the Covenant, which contained the Ten Commandments. King Solomon built the temple from 1012 to 1005 BC to keep the Ark. In 587 BC, the Babylonians destroyed the Temple, while the Ark disappeared, either being brought to Babylon or hidden by the Jews. The Tabernacle was reestablished after the reconstruction of the Temple in 515 BC, but the Roman general Pompey entered the Holy of Holies after capturing Jerusalem in 63 BC, and the Romans destroyed the Temple in 73 AD and used the Holy of Holies' curtain to wrap the golden vessels they looted from the sanctuary.
