The Syrian Popular Resistance, also called the Syrian Resistance Movement, is a Ba'athist insurgent group that was founded in western Syria by Assadist loyalists in December 2024, a month after Bashar al-Assad's overthrow by Tahrir al-Sham amid the Syrian Civil War. The Popular Resistance was led by former Ba'athist officer Suhayl al-Hassan and vowed to kill the leaders of Tahrir al-Sham, soldiers of Israel, America, and NATO. The movement employed sectarian narratives in order to undermine the HTS-led coalition, and former shabiha militiamen rallied to the Resistance and waged guerrilla attacks against the HTS in response to clearing operations in Homs. The IRGC released a statement advocating counter-revolutionary action in Syria two days after the group's formation, occurring at a time when Iran attempted to reorganize its regional proxies in the Levant.
