Hjalmar Petersen

Hjalmar Petersen (2 January 1890-29 March 1968) was the Farmer-Laborite Governor of Minnesota from 22 August 1936 to 4 January 1937, succeeding Floyd B. Olson and preceding Elmer Austin Benson.

Biography[]

Hjalmar Petersen was born in Eskildstrup, Denmark in 1890, and he was raised in Chicago, Illinois and Tyler, Minnesota. He became a newspaper owner in Askov, Minnesota in 1914, and he served as his town's village clerk and mayor before serving in the state house from 1931 to 1934, as Lieutenant Governor from 1935 to 1936, and as Governor from 1936 to 1937. He died in 1968.
