Hispania was a region of the Roman Empire which included Spain, Portugal, Andorra, and Gibraltar. Hispania was under Roman rule from 218 BC to 459 AD, with the Romans conquering parts of the peninsula from Carthage during the Punic Wars before expanding during the early 2nd century BC. Under the Roman Republic, Hispania was divided into Hispania Citerior and Hispania Ulterior, and, during the Roman Empire, Hispania Ulterior was divided into Baetica and Lusitania, while Hispania Citerior was renamed to Hispania Tarraconensis. Tarraconensis later split into Gallaecia and Carthaginensis. In 459 AD, the Visigoths conquered Hispania from the Romans.
