The Hirpini were a Samnite tribe of southern Italy. They lived in a mountainous region bordering on Basilicata towards the south, Apulia to the east, and Campania towards the west, and the Hirpini were allied with Carthage during the Punic Wars. In 209 BC, the Hirpini were forced to submit to the Roman Republic, betraying the Carthaginian garrisons in their towns. In 90 BC, at the start of the Social War, they were among the first tribes to take up arms against Rome, but they were defeated and assimilated as Romans.
