Highbridge

Highbridge is a residential neighborhood in The Bronx, New York City. The neighborhood is dominated by townhouses and 5 and 6-story apartment buildings, and it takes its name from the High Bridge built in 1848 by Irish immigrants to carry the Croton Aqueduct water across the Harlem River. By the late 1960s, the majority of Highbridge's residents were Irish, Jewish, or Italian, but they have since been replaced by large numbers of Hispanics and African-Americans. In 2010, Highbridge had a population of 37,727 people, with 64.3% being Hispanic, 32.9% African-American, 1.2% white, .7% multiracial, .5% Asian, .3% other, and .2% Native American.
