Hieronymus von Colloredo

Hieronymus von Colloredo (31 May 1732-20 May 1812) was the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg under the Austrian Empire from 1771 to 1803.

Biography[]

Hieronymus von Colloredo was born on 31 May 1732 in Vienna, Austria, the son of a high-ranking official of the Holy Roman Empire. He studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and the German and Hungarian College in Rome, and he was elected Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg in 1771. The cathedral chapter of civic officials was upset by his tyrannical rule, and he was cruel to his subject Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whom he had dismissed from his court as a result of his frequent absence from court. Von Colloredo remained Prince-Archbishop until Salzburg was secularized in 1803, and he remained the head of the archdiocese until his death in 1812 at the age of 79.
