Hernin Naranjo

Hernin Naranjo (died 1980) was a Mexican drug trafficker from Guadalajara and the brother of Hernan Naranjo. He was murdered by Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo at a Guadalajara hotel in 1980, and his brother was murdered by police chief Juan Jose Esparragoza Moreno shortly after, allowing for Miguel Angel and Esparragoza to form the Guadalajara Cartel.

Biography[]

Hernin Naranjo was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the brother of Hernan Naranjo. He and his brother became major marijuana dealers in Guadalajara during the 1970s, becoming allies with the local police and rivals with Pedro Aviles Perez's organization in Sinaloa. In 1980, Aviles' employees Miguel Angel Felix Gallardo, Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo, and Rafael Caro Quintero came to Guadalajara to make a deal between Aviles and the Naranjo brothers in the aftermath of a major Mexican Army search-and-destroy operation in Sinaloa.

Aviles' men and Naranjo met in the lobby of the Hotel Americas, where Hernin warmly greeted Miguel Angel and Ernesto before sitting down with them. He was amused with Miguel Angel's offer to move his organization's marijuana growing operations to Guadalajara, cut Naranjo in with 50% of the profits, and handle all of the distribution and work in exchange for Naranjo providing Miguel Angel with police protection. Naranjo sarcastically offered to increase the deal to 60-40, 70-30, 80-20, or even 90-10, and he then rejected the deal and instead sarcastically asked for Miguel Angel to send women from Sinaloa to serve as prostitutes in Guadalajara. Offended, Miguel Angel stood up and shot Naranjo once in the forehead and once in the chest, scaring off all of the hotel guests and shocking Ernesto. Miguel Angel was soon joined by Rafael, and they waited at the hotel to be arrested, after which they were taken to the DFS boss Juan Jose Esparragoza Moreno, with whom they reached a better arrangement. Esparragoza then killed Hernin's brother Hernan to prevent him from avenging Hernin's death.
