Hernando Siles was born in Sucre, Bolivia in 1882, and he practiced law before working as a professor. He was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1920 as a Republican, and he later served as Education Minister and War Minister under Bautista Saavedra. He was elected President in 1926 as Saavedra's handpicked successor, but he later broke openly with the domineering ex-President and his brother Abdon Saavedra, his own Vice President. Siles founded the Nationalist Party of Bolivia, and his tenure was marked by economic decline due to the onset of the Great Depression and rising diplomatic tensions with Paraguay. He was overthrown in a coup in 1930 after attempting to extend his stay in office to deal with the economy. He lived the rest of his life in exile, dying in Lima in 1942. His son Hernan Siles became President in 1956.
