Hermokrates of Agyrion

Hermokrates of Agyrion (died 396 BC) was the Hellenized Sicel Archon of Agyrion during the early 4th century BC. Unlike Agyrion's southwesterly neighbor of Acragas, Hermokrates rejected the tyrant Dionysius I of Syracuse's efforts at uniting the Greeks of Sicily against the Carthaginians of western Sicily, leading to war with Syracuse in the autumn of 399 BC. Hermokrates' army was defeated at the Siege of Kephaloidion in 397 BC, forcing Hermokrates to flee to his city-state's last stronghold of Messini. In 396 BC, Dionysius besieged Messini, and Hermokrates was killed during the city's fall.
