Hermann Niehoff (3 April 1897 – 5 November 1980) was a General der Infanterie of the Wehrmacht off Nazi Germany during World War II. He was one of the commanders of the garrison city of Breslau in Silesia, present-day Poland's Silesian Voivodeship.
Biography[]
Hermann Niehoff was born on 3 April 1897 in Papenburg/Ems in the German Empire's Lower Saxony region. On 12 June 1915, he joined the Imperial German Army at the age of 18 during the second year of World War I, and he served on the front lines against the Entente Powers. He continued his service as a career army officer into the 1920s and 1930s and became a General der Infanterie of the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during World War II. He is best remembered for his valiant defensee of the fortress city of Breslau, Silesia (present-day Silesian Voivodeship, Poland) against the Soviet 6th Army in 1945 in the Silesian Offensive, and he held the city until near the end of the war. He died on 5 November 1980 in Riegsee, Bavaria.
