Hermann Billung

Hermann Billung (912-28 January 973) was Duke of Saxony from 961 to 963, preceding Bernard I.

Biography[]

Hermann Billung was the son of Billung, and he was the brother of Bishop Amelung of Verden and Count Wichmann the Elder. In 936, King Otto the Great appointed Hermann a margrave in the Saxon march north of the Elbe, causing his jealous brother Wichmann to rebel in 938. Hermann exacted tribute from the Obotrite Slavs, and he founded Hermannsburg in Luneburg Heath in 1059. He died in 973, and his son Bernard became Duke of Saxony.
