Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham

Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham (4 September 1454-2 November 1483) was an English nobleman who led a failed rebellion against King Richard III of England from October to November 1483. His rebellion was crushed, and he was executed.

Biography[]

Henry Stafford was the son of Humphrey Stafford, Earl of Stafford and Margaret Beaufort, and he became Earl of Stafford in 1458 at the age of 4 following his father's death. He was made a ward of King Edward IV of England, and he became Duke of Buckingham in 1460 following the death of his grandfather, Humphrey Stafford, 1st Duke of Buckingham, at the Battle of Northampton. In 1466, he married Catherine Woodville, the sister of Queen Elizabeth Woodville, and they had four children: Edward, Elizabeth, Henry, and Anne. Upon the death of Edward in 1483, Henry allied himself with King Richard III of England, but he became disaffected with Richard and decided to assist Henry Tudor and Margaret Beaufort with an invasion of England. The rebellion failed, and Buckingham was executed on 2 November 1483. His son Edward would succeed him, only to himself be executed by King Henry VII's son Henry VIII for another attempted rebellion.
