Henry Pulleine (12 December 1838 – 22 January 1879) was a Lieutenant Colonel of the British Army who was the commander of the United Kingdom's forces at the Battle of Isandhlwana, where he was killed with nearly all of his men.
Biography[]
Henry Pulleine was born on 12 December 1838 in Yorkshire, England, and he was commissioned into the British 30th Regiment of Foot in 1855. Pulleine was deployed to South Africa, where he fought against the Xhosa in frontier wars, and he was made commander of the Pietermaritzburg supply depot. At the start of the Anglo-Zulu War, Pulleine was breveted Lieutenant-Colonel, and he commanded the 2,000 British troops present at the Battle of Isandhlwana. Pulleine managed to wound a Zulu warrior on the neck with his pistol before being impaled by an assegai spear; most of his men and his co-commander Anthony Durnford would also perish.
