Henry Martyn Hoyt Sr. (8 June 1830-1 December 1892) was the Republican Governor of Pennsylvania from 21 January 1879 to 16 January 1883, succeeding John F. Hartranft and preceding Robert E. Pattison.

Biography[]

Henry Martyn Hoyt Sr. was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania in 1830, and he worked as a math teacher at a seminary from 1851 to 1853, served as a Whig district attorney, supported John C. Fremont's 1856 Republican presidential campaign, served as colonel of the 52nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War (during which he was captured at the Second Battle of Charleston Harbor ), chaired the Pennsylvania Republican Party from 1875 to 1876, and served as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1879 to 1883 (reducing the state debt to $10 million). He died in 1892.
