Henry Leavenworth

Henry Leavenworth (10 December 1783 – 21 July 1834) was a Colonel of the United States during the War of 1812 and the Plains Indian Wars. He fought in the Arikara War with the Arikara tribe, and he was the founder of Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

Biography[]

Henry Leavenworth was born on 10 December 1783 in New Haven, Connecticut, and he worked as a lawyer before serving in the War of 1812. He served in the New York State Assembly before becoming an Indian agent and a US Army officer in the American West, leading US army forces in the 1823 Arikara War against the Arikara tribe, the first war with the Plains Nations in United States history. In 1827 he founded Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, and he conducted several expeditions against the Indians until he died on 21 July 1834 of sickness while fighting the Pawnee and Comanche.
