Henry Hook

Henry Hook (6 August 1850 – 12 March 1905) was a British Army sergeant who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery at the 1879 Battle of Isandlwana.

Biography[]

Henry Hook was born in Churcham, Gloucestershire, England on 6 August 1850, and he enlisted in the British Army in 1877 and was deployed to South Africa. Hook fought against the Xhosa before serving in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War; at the Battle of Rorke's Drift, he and John Williams defended the hospital from several Zulu attacks. Hook was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery, and he went on to become a Methodist preacher and doctor. He died in Gloucester in 1905.
