Henry Howland Crapo (24 May 1804-23 July 1869) was the Republican Mayor of Flint from 1860 to 1861 (succeeding William M. Fenton and preceding Ephraim S. Williams) and Governor of Michigan from 3 January 1865 to 6 January 1869 (succeeding Austin Blair and preceding Henry P. Baldwin).

Biography[]

Henry Howland Crapo was born in Dartmouth, Massachusetts in 1804 to a family of Huguenot descent. He moved to New Bedford in 1832 and worked as a surveyor, auctioneer, and whaler before entering politics and serving as tax collector for 18 years and as a justice of the peace and alderman. He moved to Flint, Michigan in 1857 to invest in local pinelands, and he served as Mayor from 1860 to 1861 before becoming a successful lumber businessman and railroad president. He served in the State Senate from 1863 to 1864 before serving as Governor from 1865 to 1869, and he died in 1869.
