Henry George Stebbins (15 September 1811-9 December 1881) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NY 1) from 4 March 1863 to 24 October 1864, succeeding Edward H. Smith and preceding Dwight Townsend.
Biography[]
Henry George Stebbins was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut in 1811, and he worked for the New York Stock Exchange (serving as its President from 1851 to 1852, 1858 to 1859, and from 1863 to 1864) before going on to serve in the US House of Representatives as a "War Democrat" from 1863 to 1864, when he resigned. He went on to serve as a railroad director and took an active part in the movement to remove Tammany Hall boss William M. Tweed from power in 1871.
