Henry F

Henry Frederick Teschemacher (16 February 1823-26 November 1904) was the Populist Mayor of San Francisco from 3 October 1859 to 30 June 1863, succeeding Ephraim Willard Burr and preceding Henry Perrin Coon.

Biography[]

Henry Frederick Teschemacher was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1823, and he moved to San Francisco in 1846 while working for a shipping house. He became a large real estate owner, and he joined the Vigilance movement, which nominated him for Mayor in 1859. Democratic divisions over slavery led to Teschemacher's victory, and he dedicated the city's first streetcar line and doubled the size of the San Francisco Police Department. He worked as a real estate agent after leaving office, and he died in retirement in Switzerland in 1904.
