Henry Bowen Anthony (1 April 1815 – 2 September 1884) was Governor of Rhode Island (W) from 1 May 1849 to 6 May 1851 (succeeding Elisha Harris and preceding Philip Allen) and a US Senator (R) from 4 March 1859 to 2 September 1884 (succeeding Allen and preceding William P. Sheffield).

Biography[]

Henry Bowen Anthony was born in Coventry, Rhode Island in 1815, and he became editor of the Providence Journal in 1838. He was a conservative, supporting law and order, property requirements for voting, and restrictions on the political power of immigrants, and he served as Governor from 1849 to 1851 and as a US Senator from 1859 to 1884. Initially conciliatory toward the Confederate secessionists during the American Civil War, he was a strong supporter of the war effort. He died in 1884.
