Henry Augustus Buchtel (30 September 1847-22 October 1924) was the Republican Governor of Colorado from 8 January 1907 to 12 January 1909, succeeding Jesse Fuller McDonald and preceding John F. Shafroth.
Biography[]
Henry Augustus Buchtel was born in Akron, Ohio in 1847, and he was raised in Elkhart, Indiana. He became an ordained Methodist minister in 1872, served as a missionary in Bulgaria in 1873 before serving as a minister in Indiana, Colorado, New York, and New Jersey for 26 years. In 1899, he became Chancellor of the University of Denver, and he reversed its financial misfortunes. He concurrently served as Governor of Colorado from 1907 to 1909, and he resigned as Chancellor in 1920 following a stroke. He died in 1924.
