Henry Adelhoch (27 October 1903-January 1956) was a German-American policeman from North Bergen, New Jersey.
Biography[]
Henry Adelhoch was born in North Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey on 27 October 1903, the youngest of eight children (Joseph, born 1885; John, born 1887; Maggie, born 1891; Charles, born 1893; George, born 1895; Frank, born 1897; and Michael, born 1898) born to German Catholic immigrants Joseph and Theresa Adelhoch, whose families originated in Bavaria in southern Germany. As a child, he delivered ice to neighbors' iceboxes, and his highest grade completed was the eighth grade. His brother - a police cadet - accidentally fell through ice and drowned, so Henry would go on to become a patrolman in his hometown of North Bergen, later becoming a detective. In the 1940 census, he was listed as working 48 hours a week, and he lived on 742 36th Street. Alongside his 33-year old wife Louise Pacailler (1907-1992, of Tenafly), the other members of the household at the time were his 8-year-old daughter Vera, his 7-year-old daughter Claire, and his 4-year-old son Alvin. He knew and befriended the boxer James J. Braddock the "Bulldog of Bergen", who also grew up in North Bergen. Adelhoch died in 1956 at the age of 52.
