Biography[]

Henrik Shipstead was born in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota in 1881 to Norwegian immigrant parents, and he set up a dental practice and served as village president of Glenwood. He went on to serve as a Farmer-Labor Party US Senator from 1923 to 1947, later joining the Republicans after accusing communists of taking over the Farmer-Labor Party. While Shipstead was a non-interventionist with regard to foreign entanglements, he did not consider himself an isolationist, opposing tariffs. Shipstead nonetheless opposed the American entry into World War II, as well as selective service, and his unpopular isolationist views led to his loss of renomination in 1946. He died in Alexandria, Minnesota in 1960 at the age of 79.
