Hemma of Altdorf

Hemma of Altdorf (808-31 January 876) was the Queen of East Francia from 843 to 876 with Louis the German.

Biography[]

Hemma of Altdorf was born in 808, a member of the House of Welf; she was the daughter of Welf I. Her sister Judith of Bavaria married Emperor Louis the Pious of Francia, while Hemma married her sister's stepson Louis the German in 827 at Regensburg; Louis was two years older than her. At one point, she led an army against the rebellious lord Adelchis of Benevento when he revolted against her husband, and he fled by boat to seek safety in Corsica, afraid of her. She died in 876, just a few months before her husband.
