Heman Allen (of Colchester)

Heman Allen (23 February 1779-7 April 1852) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-VT AL) from 4 March 1817 to 20 April 1818, succeeding Asa Lyon and preceding William Strong.

Biography[]

Heman Allen was born in Poultney, Vermont in 1779, and he became a lawyer in Colchester. He served as town clerk from 1807 to 1817, as Chittenden County sheriff from 1808 to 1810, as a judge from 1811 to 1814, in the state house from 1812 to 1817, in the US House of Representatives from 1817 to 1818, as a US Marshal from 1818 to 1823, and as Ambassador to Chile from 1823 to 1827. He failed in his 1829 and 1831 gubernatorial bids, and he became a bank president in Burlington and a lawyer in Highgate. He died in 1852.
