Helen Reddy

Helen Reddy (25 October 1941-29 September 2020) was an Australian-American singer, actress, and feminist activist. Born in Melbourne, Victoria, she came from a well-known show business family, and she became an entertainer at the age of four. After winning the Bandstand talent contest in 1966, she won a ticket to New York City, and, while her first record audition was unsuccessful, she moved to Chicago and then to Los Angeles, where she wrote "One Way Ticket" (1968) and "I Believe in Music" (1970). In 1972, she penned her signature hit, "I am Woman", which made her an icon of the feminist movement. Becoming a naturalized American citizen in 1974, she raised millions of dollars for Democratic Party political candidates and oversaw the California Department of Parks and Recreation from 1977 to 1980. She retired from live performances in 2002 and died in 2020 at the age of 78 from Addison's disease and dementia.
