
Heide is a town in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Its name means "heath" in German, and it was once known to the Danes as Heida By during the Viking Age. By 868 AD, it was a thriving village with busy field and orchards and productive croplands and pasturelands, and it was owned by Denmark. By 1447, Heide was the main village of Dithmarschen under the Holy Roman Empire, and it was ruled as an independent peasant rrepublic. It became a town in the 19th century, and, in 2018, it had 21,684 residents. The town had a CDU mayor by 2020.
