Hecuba (died 1183 BC) was the wife of King Priam of Troy during the 12th century BC.
Biography[]
Hecuba was the daughter of King Dymas of Phrygia and Euagora, and she was married off to the Trojan king Priam and bore him 19 children, namely Hector, Deiphobus, Polyxena, Cassandra, Polydorus, Paris, Creusa, Laodice, Helenus, Pammon, Polites, Antiphus, Hipponous, and Troilus. Hecuba was enslaved by Odysseus following the fall of Troy in 1183 BC, only to escape after the gods helped her shapeshift into a dog, and she avenged King Polymestor of Thrace's treacherous murder of Polydorus by blinding Polymestor and killing his two sons. Consumed with grief over the deaths of Polydorus and Polyxena, she was said to have thrown herself into the sea and was buried at Kynosema - the "dog's grave" - near present-day Kilidülbahir, Turkey.
