Haywards Heath

Haywards Heath is a town in West Sussex, England, located 36 miles south of London, 14 miles north to Brighton, and 31 miles northeast of Chichester. The town's name comes from Anglo-Saxon Hegeworth, meaning "hedge enclosure", and, by 1544, it had become known as Haywards Hoth ("heath by the enclosure with a hedge"). In December 1642, the town was the site of the Battle of Muster Green during the English Civil War, and the Parliamentarians emerged victorious. Following the arrival of the London & Brighton Railway in 1841, Haywards Heath's size increased considerably, becoming a commuter town for London, Brighton, Crawley, and Gatwick Airport. By 2011, Haywards Heath had a population of 33,845, and it was located in a Conservative Party-dominated parliamentary constituency.
