Hawaii is a non-contiguous US state, composed of hundreds of islands in the Pacific Ocean, with its capital of Honolulu being located on the main island of Oahu. Hawaii was previously a kingdom before being annexed by the United States in 1898, having been a US puppet republic from 1893 to 1898 after the overthrow of Queen Lili'uokalani. Hawaii became a center of US sugar production, the location of the important naval base at Pearl Harbor, and the hearth of the American surf culture, and it is currently known to be a tropical paradise for tourists. In 2015, Hawaii had a population of 1,431,603 people.
