Hauts-de-France

Hauts-de-France is the northernmost region of France, created in 2014 from a merger of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy; Lille serves as its capital. Hauts-de-France came into existence on 1 January 2016 after regional elections in December 2015, and its inaugural government was conservative-dominated. Its name means "Upper France", and its major towns and cities include Lille, Amiens, Roubaix, Tourcoing, Dunkirk, Calais, Villeneuve-d'Ascq, Saint-Quentin, Beauvais, and Valenciennes. In January 2019, Hauts-de-France had a population of 6,004,947 people.
